Lagavulin

Lagavulin's story begins in 1816 on the windswept island of Islay, where two illicit stills operated in a remote bay. These were consolidated into the official Lagavulin Distillery, which quickly gained recognition for its distinctive peaty character. The distillery's location on the rugged Islay coastline proved ideal—abundant peat for smoking barley and pure water from local sources became the foundation of its iconic style.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Lagavulin established itself as a serious whisky producer favoured by merchants and blenders seeking characterful spirit. While many distilleries adapted their styles over time, Lagavulin remained committed to its deeply peated identity, earning fierce loyalty from whisky enthusiasts who valued authenticity and tradition. This steadfast approach transformed it into a cult favourite among connoisseurs.

Today, Lagavulin continues its mission to produce whiskies of uncompromising quality and distinctive character. Under Diageo's stewardship since 1997, the distillery has expanded its core range and special releases whilst preserving the production methods that define its character. Lagavulin represents not merely a whisky brand, but a testament to Scottish heritage, island terroir and the enduring appeal of tradition in an ever-changing world.
